How to start a fire with a battery is our first post in the “How To” category.  Since we are going to be learning more and more survival skills over the next year or so, we thought we’d share this little gem with you.  As we all know, there are a ton of different ways to start a fire, but have you ever started a fire with a battery and a short length of copper wire? If you would like to know how then please follow the instructions below.

IMG 3225 300x200 Start a Fire With a Battery      Step 1: First thing’s first…gather yourself some tinder (DRIED grass, straw, tissue paper or cotton works best) and work it into a small “nest”.

Step 2: obtain a few lengths (3in.-5in. in length) of small gauge stranded copper wire.  this wire can be found just about anywhere such as broken aplliances, car phone chargers, etc.

Step 3: obtain a battery.  Any battery will do, even a 9-volt.  Refrain from using batteries that generate high amounts of electricity and contain harmful chemicals (such as your car battery…DUH!).  If you attempt to use such a battery you could cause yourself serious injury.

Step 4: strip the protective coating from your wire.  take a single or double strand of wire (If you use more than two strands at one time you may burn your fingers instead of your tinder). What you want to do now, is begin wrapping the wire, starting from the center, around a thin/narrow twig or stick.  A pencil will do if you can’t find anything narrower, but be sure to make the wire length extra long if you decide to do this.  When a small coil has been made remove the item you used to create it. At the end of this step you should now have  a copper coil in the middle of two straight strands of wire.

Step 5: Now you are ready to make fire!…with tinder or cotton ready, attatch one end of the wire to the positive node of the battery, and the other end to the negative node of the battery.  By doing this you have created the electrical charge necessary to generate enough heat in the coil to set your tinder on fire.  THAT”S IT!

I hope this lesson was informative, easy to understand and useful.  Don’t be discouraged if you can’t start fire on your first try.  as with all survival skills, most methods of creating fire take time and experience to perfect. Good Luck!
